Layers of Truth I & II, 2022

Layers of Truth I focuses on the themes of escape, erasure, and violence of African Americans in the summer of 1917 through the history of the East St Louis Race Massacre. There is also a reference to recent events of Police racial violence, the Michael Brown shooting in 2014, which highlights the recurrent violence against the Black community.
Analyzing the narrative of the East St Louis Race Massacre, I intentionally used materials that strongly relate to that history. The work comprises three (3) antique doors native to St. Louis that are manipulated to appear old and worn, a continuous rope that intertwines through the doors, burnt newspaper clippings from 1917 and 2014 embedded on a burnt door, historical photographs of the massacre images transferred on one door and a tree branch forcefully protruding from the back of the door that holds a noose swung over it. Unpredictable in their construction, each door carries its message, and together, they highlight a history of racial violence against the Black community.
